Give The Gift That Keeps On Not Giving This Father’s Day

Australia's sexual health experts, Marie Stopes International Australia, has called on all men who have completed their families to step up and consider the snip this Father’s Day.

Asking men if they “have the balls to become a vasectomy hero this Father’s Day”, the education campaign aims to dispel the many myths men have about the procedure and promote the importance of family planning.

“Vasectomy is an ideal method of contraception for men who have completed their families and, with a 99.5% success rate, is safe, simple, highly effective and permanent,” said Jill Michelson, National Clinical Adviser for Marie Stopes International Australia.

“Research, however, has shown that some men are afraid to undergo a vasectomy as they believe it will affect their sexual performance and testosterone levels.[1]

“Nearly a quarter of all men also wrongly believe that having a vasectomy is ‘really painful’.

“The truth is that having a vasectomy is a procedure which causes minimal pain, and won’t effect your sex life or performance in any way.

“Many couples have actually found greater sexual freedom once they no longer have the worry of contraception or an unplanned pregnancy.

“Our Vasectomy Heroes campaign aims to get these messages out there and dispel some of the stigma that is associated with the procedure.”

The national campaign features real-life stories of three men talking about their vasectomy experience.

“With the help of our vasectomy heroes – Matt, Darren and Andrew – who talked openly and candidly about their experience of having a vasectomy, we’re hoping to be able to put a lot of vasectomy myths out there to bed, so to speak!,” said Ms Michelson.

The Vasectomy Heroes campaign is supported by an Online Vasectomy Chat service, allowing men to anonymously get expert answers to all of the questions that they have about the procedure, without leaving the comforts of their own home or office. The chat service can be accessed via www.vasectomyinfo.com.au and is available Monday - Friday 8am - 8pm and Saturday from 9am - 2pm EST.

“So this Father’s Day, we’re calling on all men to get clued up on vasectomy, and all present buyers to forget socks, jocks and handkerchiefs - not having to worry about contraception is a present both dads and mums can enjoy for years to come!,” said Ms Michelson.
